There are a couple of these stories that I’d already heard (the digitally mapped worm brain running a LEGO Mindstorm, and the brain-to-brain word transmissions), but also a few I’d not.

The one about the claustrum possibly being a kind of “consciousness switch” is wild.

But the wildest, in my view is the injection of a precursor to human astrocytes (a type of glial cell) into mice brains, as a way to make the mice smarter. The original mice neurons remain, but are now surrounded and supported by human astrocytes, which are 10 to 20 times the size of mouse astrocytes and carry 100 times as many tendrils. 

The scientist reportedly considered running the experiment on monkeys, deciding against for ethical reasons, and perhaps after having watched the latest remakes of The Planet of the Apes.
