Now That’s Auto Pilot

AI system being tested to land planes in the event of pilot being incapacitated. What’s interesting is it works like an after-market add on, rather than integrated, built-in solution. It relies on machine vision to read the instruments and a robotic arm to operate the controls.

  1. Gideon Rosenblatt, I wonder how long before people would actually buy a ticket for a flight if they knew it would be piloted by AI instead of humans?

  5. Oh, it was a simulated 737? Well, that does make a difference, but I would imagine that today’s simulators are pretty darn close to reality, aren’t they?

  11. If Sally isn’t flying that plane, I’m not on it.

  13. But it did not fly the plane at all .. it just steadily configures the autopilot to do that … sadly….. (AI using lower level AI .. yeah, we have ants controlling microbes .. lol ;))

    (Still a somewhat cool thing … 😉

  15. I don’t think people realize that the planes already fly themselves pretty much.

  17. Most of the landings for commercial airlines done by utilizing autopilot, great example lack of it – crash of Asiana Airlines Flight 214 in SFO

  19. What happens when it decide not to open the pod bay doors? Or conversely decides to open them midflight?

  23. Yifat Cohen you can’t replicate Sally, but AI function to handle such applications and simulate Sally’s approach. Actually, I would trust much more AI function to handle it, than normal human, including flock of geese in the both turbine situation.
