How might low-cost artificial intelligence and smart equipment change the way you work out in 2025?
Here’s another one of my new Sci-fi Economics pieces. These aren’t meant to be riveting works of fiction, so much as explorations of how technology and humans might come together in new, and more healthy, ways than we sometimes do today.
In this piece, I look at such a future for workout centers – using this scenario to explore how smaller businesses might develop cost-effective strategies for layering artificial intelligence on top of existing dumb equipment, rather than scrapping what they have and starting from scratch.
One of the other ideas here is how this kind of layering of technology helps to explain how we end up with a world that is always a fusion of past and future, working together. It’s a bit of a twist on William Gibson’s “the future is already here – it’s just not very evenly distributed.”
The other thing worth calling out is the focus on the member-owned cooperative and how it not only helps people build equity in a local business, but also ensures that their investments in training artificial intelligence build equity for themselves over time as well.
