As some of you may have noticed, over this last week I’ve been thinking about capturing knowledge – transforming it from tacit knowledge into explicit knowledge. The scale I was looking at was web-scale, and so naturally, I focused a lot on what Google is up to these days.
But there is another scale of knowledge transformation that is really important. It’s the kind that happens within organizations when extremely valuable knowledge is locked up in the minds and bodies of key individuals and needs to be passed on to others in the organization. Often times this happens around questions of succession and retirement, but not always.
So, earlier this week I passed my recent article on knowledge extraction and artificial intelligence on to Steve Trautman, who is someone I used to work with at Microsoft and who, over the last 15 years or so has become a leading expert on the question of knowledge transfer. As part of his reply, he pointed me to this very practical guide he’d pulled together to assess organizational knowledge transfer projects.
It’s really worth looking at, and so I thought I’d share it with you here.
